EDITOR'S NOTES

Cardinal builds an artwork of Catholicism. An entire sense of space is generated in this scent: of liturgy, vestments, gold, and communion. The magic is an immediate familiarity: a brisk Eau de Cologne structure which pivots on freshness and weightlessness, then sublimated to transcendent heights with the use of incense, amber, and resin notes, imparting an oily but translucent textural sensation. The work is sparkly, dare we say heavenly, like a celestial flash of cool bright white light with a blushing centre, radiating in all directions. Cardinal is full yet light: an ambient and atmospheric work without boundary.

There was a time when this would have been a 5 star olibanum fragrance for me, but there are some star players around that trump Cardinal (as well as Avignon) such as Liturgies des Heurs by Jovoy and the incredible Casbah by Robert Piguet. I think Cardinal is a more gentle take on Liberties Orange’ Incence Intense - it has that shrillness without the ridiculous beast mode. It’s lovely, but not the holy grail.
