Pomades - Australia

More than just a catch-all for men’s hair styling products, pomade is a hair styling product known for its ability to provide a smooth, sleek finish with varying degrees of shine and hold. They are a must for the well-groomed. Think short and sharp haircuts, meticulously combed and styled. Pomade works best for classic, structured hairstyles such as slick backs, pompadours, and side parts. For messy, textured looks, clay or wax might be more suitable.

What are the Types of Pomade Available?

Traditionally pomades were made from scented oils, and few can still be found on the market today that adheres to this original style. They offer a strong hold with high shine, and are water-resistant.

Nowadays, most pomades are water-based. They are easier to wash out, and offer a variety of holds and shines. They dry out faster than oil-based pomades but allow more control over the level of hold.

How Do I Choose the Right Pomade for my Hair Type?

Fine hair: Choose a lightweight pomade with a lighter hold to avoid weighing the hair down. Opt for water-based formulas for easy restyling.

Thick or coarse hair: A stronger hold, such as an oil-based pomade, works best to control thicker hair and keep styles in place.

Curly hair: Go for a pomade with a medium hold and moisturising properties to control frizz without making curls stiff.

How Do I Apply Pomade?

Start with a small amount (about a dime-sized portion) and rub it between your palms to warm it up. When applied to damp, light-towel dried hair - pomade provides a shinier, sleeker look. While applying it to dry hair will give more volume with a matte or lower-shine finish. Apply it evenly, focusing on the areas where you want the most control or shine. Use a comb or fingers to style your hair as desired.

Can I Layer Pomade?

Yes, pomade can be combined with other products  to achieve different textures and finishes. For example, you might use pomade for control and shine, while adding a matte paste to increase volume.

How Do I Wash Out Pomade Products?

Using pomade properly won’t damage your hair, but leaving heavy pomades, especially oil-based ones, in for too long can clog hair follicles or lead to scalp issues. To prevent build-up, wash your hair regularly and avoid using too much product.

A good degreasing shampoo is essential - noting that oil-based pomades may require a stronger approach, and repeated use.
