Rescued from obscurity by students who tracked down the reclusive author at a remote cabin in the Austrian Alps, this collection of alpine fairy tales marks the return of enigmatic writer, Chunhua Luli. The main characters in these stories are wild animals but the tender lessons they impart cut straight to the heart of the human condition. In the titular story, a young fox becomes obsessed with a butterfly, only to learn the hazards of infatuation. Other themes explored include the advantages of unflagging ambition, the importance and impact of beautiful objects, the pursuit of serenity, and the power of positive thinking. Forty years after her remarkable debut, Luli once again reminds us we are all animals, connected by an expansive and ever-changing ecosystem much larger than ourselves.

The beauty of jasmine is on full display in Fox in the Flowerbed, harmonising its many impressions to form a coherent floral perfume. It is more than a soliflore, but less than a symphony – layering many of the same voices to create difference through sameness. A blushing off-white fragrance, the jasmine note is generous but measured, expressing a slight rubberiness that transforms into a potent tea-like freshness, flecked with citrus, fruit, honey, and green facets. It is decorated with delicate and colourful wildflowers, as well as the softening touch of atmospheric tulip flower. Pink peppercorn offers a spicy bite without fangs, while frankincense coats the total scent in a purifying haze – it is smokeless yet softening, filling the many spaces in and around these petals. One also finds a slight camphoraceous touch, a shiver of strange freshness drawn from woody components. Above all else, this fragrance invites one to dive, nose-first, into a luscious flowerbed.
