Shapton Glass Stone 4000

I've used quite a few sharpening systems over the years and have a couple of sets of cheap stones. They are mostly pretty disappointing. The two different colour stone type are very soft so change shape quickly and take a while to sharpen. The diamond plates have issues with corroding. I finally bit the bullet and bought three Shapton stones. They immediately feel amazing to sharpen with. There is no need to soak so they are very easy to use and they take material off fast. I wish I'd bought these earlier.

I have four of the Shapton Glass Stones and am still amazed on the edge that they can produce. There is a bit of drag when using it which is good but what is amazing is that this drag just feels like smooth resistance and the results speak for themselves. I use these to hone straight razors. I sharpened one today after deliberately blunting the edge first to get rid of imperfections and incorrect sharpening. In order used a 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000 then finished on 3 graded strops. Then shaved with it.
The shave was very smooth and clean.

These ceramic stones are excellent for sharpening woodworking tools would highly recommend.

This is now of 2 stones I own (the other a Shapton 8000).

I am happy with the quality of the result on my kitchen knives but suggest that people also get the 8000 for their cut throats.
