Irreverently playing with the idea of ‘blue’ scents – perfumes with decidedly conventional personalities. The union of the real and the unreal, the clashing of the impossible and the mundane, the surrealistic manifest that life is never truly what it seems to be. The meeting of fire and nightshade, of juicy mandarin, grandiose amber and sombre oud, King Blue is an oneiric wood supreme. King Blue opens with a bright, innocent mandarin. Pink pepper adds an attention-grabbing sparkle, while blackcurrant accentuates its sharpness. But soon, a different tune begins to play. The sensual tones of amber link to the mandarin. Oak chips introduce woodiness. And before we know where we are, the oud has pounced – and holds us in its mesmerising spell.

King Blue respects the ‘blue’ style of perfumery while extending it into new territories. Indeed, Amouage dirties this blue with animalic oud and leather notes, first starting with a familiar mandarin top note and the sour-sweet flash of blackcurrant. While this impression lasts the duration, rapidly a funky impression grows that works in contrast with this soft citric freshness. King Blue preserves the stylistic heart of the ‘blue’ category, working with great contrasts that result in intense and powerful forms of freshness. And here the gulf of this contrast is wide, making compatible of discernably different styles. King Blue is undoubtedly a woody fragrance, and certainly one that explores all of its variations and pairings.

Top 5 Amouage, 9.5/10 fragrance.

This fragrance should be in every top 5 Amouage list for anyone who has tried it. If you like Amouage for the unapologetically strong, complex, high quality, high oil concentration (this one is 35%!) & interesting fragrances then this one is right up there with the other greats from the house.

The delicious fruity/berry notes in this are so amazing, by itself it could be a great fresh fragrance—but this is NOT left by itself, & it is NOT a fresh fragrance. The frankincense, pink pepper give the fragrance spice & lift. The ambers a warmth, accompanied with woody notes.

Now we arrive to the two biggest stars of the show in this fragrance: the sandalwood & the oud. The oud is a very high quality assam oud, & it is not hidden in this. It is present from the opening to the dry down. It is woody, smoky, earthy, & very rich. The sandalwood in this is just like the oud, that it is present from opening to the dry down. This is by far what leaves the biggest scent trail for this fragrance, & it is divine.

If you are having trouble getting past the animalic opening, try this fragrance as something that is not meant to be enjoyed by having your nose right up to it (although you can do that too, I personally have no issue with it but I understand some may) spray it on some clothing or some paper towel & leave the room. Come back later & it will have filled the room with what others smell around you when you wear this fragrance.

My only complaint with this fragrance is a personal one: I am not the biggest fan of leather, which this fragrance has. But it can easily be looked past, so only 0.5 points off for that.
