A brisk bergamot notes washes over you like a draft of glacial air. You feel the cold grip of pink pepper, the slight tingle of pimento berry in your fingers and frankincense encapsulating your past and your future. A deep breath fills your lungs with the fierce and smoky scent of sand vetiver and of an animalic rose, whose weathered tobacco accents tame the tension between an earthy papyrus and a silken touch of sandalwood. Yet this is roads’ end, where the sun is always high, and rays of aldehydic mystikal suddenly spear through Saffron and Suede, your leathery cloak of doubts, to kindle a mist of akigalawood, shimmering like a swarm of fireflies. A vertical totem of mineral woods and stellar sparks of spice, Purpose is a shamanic awakening, the scent of feeling at peace, of finding your roots, of feeling complete.

It is possible to imagine Purpose as a study of frankincense (olibanum), an ingredient Amouage is well versed with, submitting it to reinvention and exploring the full extent of its possibilities. All of its facets are drawn out, from sticky green and fruity, to woody and spicy. Perfumer Quentin Bisch adds in order to extend and transform, beginning with the bite of black pepper, fruity pink pepper, the grip and texture of bergamot, and the fiery snap of pimento rounded out with the sheen of saffron. This is but a prelude, a curtain, for dry woody notes to enter the stage, including vetiver, papyrus, and sandalwood - intensified with Bisch’s hallmark flourish of Akigalawood, redolent of patchouli, and the curious Mystikal, which adds an overall scorched effect to the fragrance - like an atmosphere of lit incense.
