Perfume is an evolving industry, and as new technologies enable new qualities of natural (and synthetic) materials, it is possible to revisit beloved notes in a renewed light. There can be no doubt that Patchouli Mania is a contender for a benchmark patchouli, celebrating modern synthetics as it fuses natural patchouli oil with Clearwood, an ingredient that adds beaming light to the already warm and ambery-woody character of the natural material, deepening its woody, balsamic, and resinous (sesquiterpene) tones. Ambery Cetalox in the base adds familiarity and a tell-tale sense of modernity, but is dosed finely by the perfumer so it never distracts nor detracts from the hero note - instead, it is part of the secret to the scent’s body and trail.

That said, the patchouli here needn’t be big or burdensome in order to be the hero note, and is marvellously lean yet impactful. Cocoa is a usual bedfellow, as is spice, which is in this instance the addictively long and fresh hum of coriander seed. Note the persistent hazelnut feature right at the beginning, which drives top-down in this scent, as well as tea - which adds another dimension of green to this fragrance, whilst its dry tannins feign a leatheriness, complementing the patchouli note. Patchouli Mania is a special creation, as layers of earthiness converge in a truly beautiful way.
