The falling fragrance.

There is a blessing weary of a tree that is always ill. Its branches are heavy with time returning, ripening, and the earth receives - like a rough cushion - the fruits of a memory unashamed.

Each step sinks into its truth, between my fingers I hold the peach, still warm from the sun. The thin skin opens, gives way, the mouth fills with liquid honey and root.

It is a bite that tastes of mud, a sap of rain and dirty hands.

There is no longer any distance now between what falls and what remains on the skin.

Memory nourishes that breath that tastes of home.

In the end, it is love too - the firefly that had lost its way in those warm nights. And that garden answered her as it did my tired, useless silence.

Because hands are dirty with mud. And because perhaps mud is life.

Editor's Notes

Fruit falling to the earth. Perfumes built around a central fruit note tend to be occupied with idealisation: the perfect degree of juiciness, ripeness, lusciousness. Is idealisation the same as achieving naturalism? Is the perfect peach still a natural one?

Fango e Pesca strikes the balance: a real and perfect peach in imperfect conditions. Skin glistening in the light, bursting with sweet nectar, the perfect sunburst colour of red, orange, and yellow - this peach has rolled in the mud, and tumbled through the garden, with some mush from an excess of rain - nature exhales.

The marriage of peach to a woody-mossy structure is a classic of perfumery. The reference here, of course, is Mitsouko (Guerlain, 1919), with a vibrancy and intensity - peach shows off its juiciest, creamiest side that brings Gucci Rush (1999) to mind, which married the fruit to luscious white florals and vanilla. Fango e Pesca is unafraid of some exaggeration, it is a story after all, while its mossy fond lends darkening contrast, and the faintest hint of gloam among the sunshine. Violet leaf smells like the rain, and tobacco imparts shadow. Patchouli brings the earth to mind and keeps it there - the muddy aspect to the scent perfectly perfumey and wearable. Fascinating and brilliantly executed.
