A brilliantly dark graphic novel, A City On Fire is the story of two match-makers. Rupert literally fabricates matches in a factory on the waterfront while Frances writes a dating column for the city’s newspaper. Both are recluses who haunt the night’s shadows observing clandestine activities from afar but never partaking. That changes one fortuitous evening when they are both witness to the same high-profile murder and are forced to come together as an unlikely vigilante pair in order to save their own names.

A mysterious, dark, smoky woody with aromatics, fresh spice and amber — distinctive and great for cool winter nights.

Editor's Notes

Connoisseurs of smoke fragrances will be pleasantly surprised by the remarkable clarity and finesse of A City on Fire, which is high impact and full potency – never at the expense of its lucidity. Balanced is the word. This arrangement of smoke and fire is well under control, as this dark cloud assumes elegant shape and proportion, refined with the cool and resinous touch of cardamom. A City on Fire lacks roughness, the source of this smoke from a combustion of clean materials - including cade, spikenard herb, labdanum, and clearwood - a patchouli material that emphasises earthy dryness. One is beguiled to follow the trails of smoke, as this fragrance reveals itself to be as woody and earthy as it is smoky.

Try at decant first

I tried a decant first and then went in for the full bottle. I love smokey scents and this has that in spades but I also love conifer / juniper scents and the dry down is so darn good - I feel like I get two journeys and this lasts and lasts. Its not the sort of fragrance I'd just whip out and douse myself in front of anyone ('douse', did you see what I did there, lol), but after it has had 5 or 10 mins to settle, its not obnoxious.

Super pleased

Bought the tester, looking for a dupe of Trvdon Revolution that I could get easily in NZ. Was more than please, it’s just as described in my opinion!

Sophisticated and powerful.

From the first seconds of application, City on Fire will make it clear what you have committed to for the rest of the day. This is a strong, long lasting perfume, with a wide sillage. This is a scent which one never quite stops noticing on themselves, which is perhaps ideal from an unusual boutique perfume with a lot of character.

The main accord, as is no surprise, is smoke, and it comes out of the bottle loud and without any subtly. Rather than 'bonfire' or 'bushfire' this reminds me much more of the smell of a handful of smoked peat, or the inside of a freshly charred bourbon barrel. There is a cleanness to the smoke that I just don't associate with standing near an active fire. Only the pleasant aspects of smoke are here - nothing about it is ashy, stale, or unwashed from a camping trip.

As the perfume top notes mellow, the wood characters become far more pronounced, changing the flavour of the smoke to something that reminds me of an aromatic wood fueled meat smoker (sans the meat. A spiced sweetness also becomes noticeable.

Before the end of the day when you are left with the base notes, the smoke is certainly still there, but has made room for a suede leather, amber, dark vanilla, and cardamon pod sweetness, making it a very comforting, but complex scent.

I think this is an obvious scent for the colder months, being that it is quite cozy once the intensity dissipates. However, I could also see this working really well as an attention grabbing choice for a summers night out for drinks at a bar.

I was not sure what to expect when trying this, given some of the more over the top reviews left for it, but I was pleased to find this was far from a one note novelty, or especially challenging. It is a very well balanced and sophisticated (albeit strong) perfume that I really enjoyed.

Apply with restraint. A little goes a long way with City on Fire.
