A quest and an attempt to grasp an olfactory nothingness: snow. A sweet, fresh, soothing, contemplative scent.

Mimosa and narcissus absolutes snort and stand out amid fresh, aqueous, and ozonic notes. A cold wind swirls yellow pompoms and white petals to the surface of a pool of water stuck in the ice. The flakes of late snow cover a Japanese mineral garden in silence and white. Surrounded by swirls of incense, a meditating Zen master contemplates this floral and airy ballet. And since only packed and solidified snow can burn, the aldehydes metallize and harden the sweetness of the accord while warming it.

Occasion:
A meditation in the snow, stillness and motion. A concrete abstraction: the touch and feel of snow, its contradictions, its strength and its softness. Spices and flowers work through a fluffy fresh body. Cooling, but also, paradoxically, warming. A charming wearable poetry.

Isabelle Larignon's Inspiration:

It all started with the discovery of an astonishingly poetic text, a pamphlet by the astronomer and mathematician, Johannes Kepler entitled, On the Six-Cornered Snowflake dated 1610. In a playful tone, the astronomer tells the story of his quest: to find a New Year’s gift inspired by the concept of nothingness for his patron and friend, a fan of Nihil, namely nothingness.

Dust, wind, smoke, sparks of fire, drops of water, … Kepler lists what Nature offers as objects evoking nothing but which unfortunately still represent too much. The text is a meditation on the geometry of snowflakes and on any hexagonal shape revealing the cosmopoesis of the Universe: “From this almost nothing, a tiny atom of snow, I was close to recreating the whole Universe, that contains everything”.

This text opened a quest, mine as a perfumer, to capture the spirit of snow. The snow, its smell as silent as a landscape caught in its felted coat, as deaf as the sounds absorbed by its porous structure and rugged surface. And yet, the snow and its snowflakes are not lacking in evocations. Cold, white, purity, powdery, fluffy, lightness, airy, watery, ozonic, geometry, contemplative, meditative … and also oxymorons: burn, hardness, metallic.

Editor's Notes

Here Isabelle Larignon’s approach is photographic, with a magical sense of movement and time. Her image of snow feels as if it is forming, changing, freezing and melting before us. It captures both the delicate detail of a single snowflake and the vast, pristine whiteness of snow as a whole.

Le Flocon de Johann K is less about literally smelling snow than about capturing how snow feels. With your eyes closed, the fragrance becomes an invitation to imagine: softness, coldness, clarity, sparkle and the quiet landscape beneath the snow.

Mimosa and white musks create the soft, fluffy texture of snow. Citrus and cyclamen bring brightness and sparkle, while mint, cardamom and aldehydes add an icy freshness. As the fragrance develops, the cold, airy landscape shifts into something warmer and more earthy. Frankincense, mosses, lichen, wild flowers and shrubs emerge, suggesting a hidden garden slowly revealed as the snow melts.

Musk is at the heart of the fragrance, moving between the coolness of ice and the softness of freshly fallen snow. The result is less a literal portrait of snow than an impression of it—a fragrance built from sensations, memories and imagination.
