A true ode to coffee. In Cafe Arabesque, perfumer Antoine Lie has discovered coffee from a new perspective, faithfully expressing its terroir, characteristics, and nuances. After a long selection process - exploring many varieties of coffee bean in the quest for an elegant profile - the choice is a specialty coffee extract from Brazil, perfectly roasted to reveal its most desirable facets. Then handed over to Les Indemodables’ exclusive laboratory - L'Atelier Français des Matières - these roasted coffee beans then undergo ultrasound techniques, improving the quality of extraction. The resulting extract earns a ‘Grand Cru’ label, and is here used at an astonishing 6%.

The composition opens with fresh, vibrant notes that instantly evoke the aromatic, woody, and liquorice facets of a characterful ristretto. It is syrupy, concentrated, and deep. This construction is not merely vertical; this concentrated shot of black gold gradually turns into a cream milky coffee - a mochaccino - with hints of cocoa powder and lightly roasted hazelnut. The base, which firmly sets Cafe Arabesque into the amber family, enhances the olfactory complexity of this coffee extract. Benzoin resinoid from Laos, notably selected for the large size of their tears, and sandalwood album from New Caledonia, unveils a sensual, warm, and highly additive trail that creates an irresistible desire.

Coffee - as you know it, but also, not exactly as you expect it. Trust Les Indemodables to achieve the balance: interested in the fullest expression of a quality coffee note, possible due to serious work at the material and extractive level. The most apt choice of coffee beans, Mondo Novo and Catuai varieties from Brazil, are then roasted carefully to best reveal their many facets, lending themselves to use in perfumery. And on the other side, this exquisite, multidimensional extract is the star of a brilliant ‘total’ composition. Here the coffee note is more than an accent, but it is not simply a single note either. Cafe Arabesque is a bona fide perfume, with layers, dimensions, and development. Categorically an amber fragrance, the coffee note clicks right into a mesmerising benzoin mantle, while a discreet line of myrrh adds counterpoint with its slightly sharp profile - leading into vanilla, nutmeg, and liquorice - as if to season this fantasy beverage. A dash of textured milk arrives by way of sandalwood - it is the wood that melts. Pure and real, this extraction from New Caledonia is unobstructed by synthetic materials, preserving its natural decadence. With hints of cocoa and hazelnut - one could certainly call Cafe Arabesque a gourmand, though that might sell it somewhat short. Certainly tempting and unquestionably delicious, there’s no forgetting that this is a serious work of perfumery - made with intention, technique, and creativity on full display.
