There’s more than one way to approach Iris Perle, which successfully stirs a whole mood - a rare achievement in the world of perfumery. Its name fosters a bit of misdirection - while it is certainly an iris fragrance, its central characteristics are the result of an assemblage of materials, ranging from clary sage, aldehydes, green violet leaves, mandarin skin, mimosa, jasmine, and ylang-ylang. That said, all the best impressions of iris are present - cosmetic powder, earth and dust that teeters into the melancholic, cool florist fridges, and warm hay redolent of fresh bread. Zing, spark, and hum - it is certainly pearlescent and precious.

It opens with an icy cold shimmer that resembles the glacial - a brilliant play of colours that emerge through all the grey, weaving through a range of complex impressions. A breeze of jasmine (sharpened with hedione) works its way through this composition, while a powder puff of mimosa and solar ylang-ylang adds some gentle diffusive light and warmth to the grey skies. The coast is nearby: some mineral and saline effects give the fragrance an unexpected edge, emphasised with the sparkle of aldehydes and petitgrain.
