Zoologist’s Elephant is a sandalwood fragrance, beginning and ending with this note – which is venerated and imagined in a highly inventive context. The sandalwood accord in Elephant marries 26 natural and synthetic materials in order to convincingly replicate rare and prized Mysore sandalwood, fine-tuning the note according to the imagination of the perfumer. The sandalwood note is durable, emphasised, and multifaceted, thumping its characteristic creaminess contrasted with a dry woody core. Developing this duality, perfumer Chris Bartlett joins this with a chocolate accord that melts into the grains of sandalwood, adding richness, earthiness, and a discernible point of darkness amongst the open air of Elephant as a whole.

On the other hand, the creamy, sweet, floral-tinged, and even slightly soapy sensation of coconut milk is the foil for a tropical rainforest fantasy; the link that connects the core sandalwood note to a stampede of elephants crunching down on tree leaves, earth, and the occasional white petalled flower. Elephant welcomes two perspectives at once: a close look at a fine sandalwood, situated in the fresh leafy green air. This green is not slouchy, but prismatic and concentrated, a medley of herbal, floral and cooling mint and violet leaf impressions. This high-pitched accent quickly softens with the dry warmth of black tea and incense, shading the breezy atmosphere of Elephant.
