Its name gives the clue. Orange tree in Spanish Arabic. There you are, standing on a Moroccan roof. An exquisite coolness wafts up, chasing the clinging heat of the day. The curtains move lazily in the breeze. Shadows of orange trees stretch in the setting sun.

The orange blossom, merging with notes of petitgrain and mandarin, evokes the divine freshness that gradually falls on the heat of the day. Marshmallow and vanilla exacerbate its savoury, gourmet side. Deceptively innocent, it craves transgression, addiction, and sweet follies.

Azahar is a fragrance about light, and the specific way the light falls and rests on the landscape. It is the way the wind blows, the weathering on buildings, and the manner in which shade and shadows draw angular lines against contrasting lengths of sunlight. Azahar has incredible precision, bursting with citrus notes - its Cologne burst of orange blossom, bergamot, neroli has an impressive florality, contrasted by a bitter leafiness. It is brilliantly nuanced, refined and subtle, and recalls vintage perfumery bursting with hesperidic top notes. My mind goes to Jicky (Guerlain, 1889), which famously took a classic eau de cologne as its top, like a pre-made.

Azahar smiles. Its piquant heart of spicy florals gently mutates the scent as our attention moves downwards from top to bottom, all of which rests on a beautiful quality of vanilla that gives Azahar its generous softness. Orange blossom is certainly an important note, but the sensation of the scent as a whole is key - situating its wearer in an extraordinary scene: a simple one, but totally picturesque.
