Few ingredients in perfumery are as immediately recognisable — or as quietly complex — as vanilla. Derived from the cured pods of Vanilla planifolia, a tropical orchid native to Mexico, it brings a warmth that feels almost edible: sweet, slightly smoky, faintly spiced, with a creamy softness that rounds out everything around it.

In fragrance, vanilla rarely works alone. It is the great harmoniser — deepening musks, softening woods, anchoring florals, giving oriental compositions their characteristic richness. At higher concentrations it turns gourmand, sugary, almost dessert-like. Used with restraint it is simply warm skin.
