L’Eau des Immortels celebrates its namesake material - helicrysum, otherwise known as immortelle or everlasting flower - first drawing upon its oldest meaning: “golden sun” in Latin. The result is marvellous: both the burnish and shine of gold is rendered in scent, as well as the golden fire of the sun to golden brown earth, resin, and dried fruit.

L’Eau des Immortels is significant as it draws the link between Camille Goutal and her mother, Annick Goutal, one of the legends of the early wave of niche perfumery, alongside L’Artisan Parfumeur and Diptyque. With the skilled touches of Isabelle Doyen, L’Eau des Immortels revisits Annick Goutal’s Sables (1975), the first perfume to employ everlasting flower - the perfume’s name speaking to the impression of scorched, golden sand. There is only so much value in comparison, though the benefit of many years has resulted in a fragrance infinitely more penetrable - all without losing its spectacular strength or essential identity.

The scorch is there, like the black splotches on the surface of bruleed sugar, lending smoke and bitterness to sticky golden caramel sweetness. But the immortelle extract itself is herbal, redolent of hard stemmy herbs like woody thyme, or marjoram and savoury, with hints of celery seed and lovage. There too is the unmistakable spiciness, like fenugreek and pepper warmed in brown butter and maple syrup - this sweetness also recalls raisins, liquorice, Bourbon, and old fortified wines. These many intoxications gives immortelle a profile that smells at once borrowed while entirely being its own, happily leaning into more robust notes of leather, smoke, and wood.

All of this is present here, and forms part of a bold amber construction with echoes of spent and charred oak barrels, and aged decorative wood. One imagines thin sheets of gold leaf fluttering in the sun-warmed wind, sand radiating heat like an oven, replete with mirage-like heat lines. L’Eau des Immortels is a textural, sensual, sensory bounty. Sunburnt vegetation, combustion, wood-fire, a bittersweet grounding of dark cocoa - it could only be the work of a talented perfumer who is able to hold everything together, arranged like a beautiful song.
